Moving from writer to editor without mishap
Karen F. Brown Dunlap
Dean of the reporting, writing and editing faculty at the Poynter Institute, Karen Dunlap focuses on good writing and effective leadership. She stresses the editor's leadership role in The Effective Editor: How to Lead Your Staff to Better Writing and Better Teamwork, which she wrote with Foster Davis.
At Poynter Institute she uses her newspaper experience and her research on outstanding editors and news executives to encourage managers to examine their behaviors. Some of her workshops involve analyzing excellent writing and discussing how writers produce it.
Dr. Dunlap has been an editor of and contributor to the annual Best Newspaper Writing series. Earlier she was a reporter for the Nashville Banner, Macon News and St. Petersburg Times and a faculty member at the University of South Florida.
